That experience of high quality begins immediately on arrival in Muscat, where the first phase of this exquisite new terminal is designed as a sequence of engaging spaces through the different stages of the passenger process, creating a markedly different experience to the common large enclosure approach adopted by so many airports.

The airside facilities are housed over three levels, with the main concourse providing ease of exit to three piers. The design focus on optimal passenger flow within the commercial planning includes a walk through duty free shop for originating departures while the high proportion of transfer passengers on the transfer route was manipulated to introduce them into the frontage zone of the main duty free store. Several operational elements were re-arranged and rationalised in the planning process, including the amalgamation of three vertical circulation cores into one and the relocation of access to two gate lounges below the main concourse level. Completely bespoke environments were designed for the general seating areas to offer the highest level of civility and comfort.

Following our planning of the commercial space for the terminal our role was expanded to include the design of the departure lounge.
