Project Description
The Extra Schengen commercial space was carved out as part of the master planning project the airport developed with local architects Bobotis & Bobotis.
This allowed for a generous Decompression zone post security and a series of zones that passengers move through – The “Agora”, “Stoa” and finally “Plateia”, and dictated a walkthrough format with excellent vistas and decompression after security.
Within the store, above the walkway and to the entire right side of it is a double height volume, and to the left, a relatively low ceiling. Whilst this gave us an interesting interior volume, it did pose a challenge in terms of how to light the space in the high spaces. We created a pergola type structure over the perfume and cosmetics area to the right, which allowed us to light and service the space efficiently.
The shop is divided into two ‘regions’ flanking the central pathway: Liquor, tobacco and food on the left under the lower ceiling, and perfume and cosmetics to the right in the double height volume.
Materials and finishes of each side divide the categories into the overriding store concept inspired by the land and sea of Athens. ‘Land’ uses warmer tones through timbers, vegetation, terracotta and the Greek key pattern, while ‘Sea’ is represented by classic Greek blues and whites.

Throughout the store we used the olive leaf as a motif forming 3-dimensional lighting objects and it was also integrated into the store identity.
Each side of the store leads passengers to their respective focal points. The left side’s Hellenic Gourmet ‘Olive Garden’ is focused around local food and to the right ‘The Marine Spa’ creates a dynamic backdrop to the P&C zone.
