Project Description

Identifying the strongest elements of a local culture is easy – but blending them into the fabric of the travel retail experience is a major challenge… at Terminal 1 we expressed the very best of Ireland.

In designing all of the retail space operated directly by the airport authority (DAA) at the revitalised Dublin Airport we set out to deliver a true expression of Ireland, its people and its culture.

DAA’s first ever walk-through store rivals any in the world and has set several precedents. The development includes new and refreshed stores such as the award-winning Irish Whiskey Collection, which has the most diverse range of whiskey brands in the world, Candy Cloud a vibrant new confectionery concept created in Ireland and the Wine Goose Chase, which features wines from around the world but with a connection to Ireland. It also boasts an enhanced Perfume and Cosmetics area, which has Ireland’s largest collection of fragrances and a number of Irish exclusives.

This design concept delivers a highly engaging retail environment that links closely with the capital city and drives a powerful impact on commercial performance. Prior to opening, DAA set high targets for the store’s performance, all of which have been exceeded.

DAA is currently studying how similar concepts can be rolled out into Terminal 2.

We set out to create strong individual category ‘worlds’ to make the shopping experience intuitive.

For white liquor, we designed a backlit display for the wall bays in order to highlight the variety of liquids. Surrounding this the walls incorporate vertical light beams which appear to peel away into feature lighting drop pendants over the space.

“Increasing our sales by +30% in the current economic climate is an incredible achievement and it’s all thanks to The Irish Whiskey Collection. We wanted to create an amazing shop window for Irish whiskey, and we’re already reaping the benefits of our investment in the category.”

This must be one of the most striking transformations we have ever achieved. ‘The Street’ as it was known, was a linear experience where the route to the gate was primary and shops secondary. The project turned that on its head talking all passengers through an exciting shopping experience exposing them to all categories. The financial results and passenger satisfaction speaks for itself.
