Project Description
The new design for the main terminal at Sangster International Airport seamlessly blends creative design with commercial drivers.
Our role with Sangster has been all encompassing. First it was commercial planning, then design of the commercial area, followed by being appointed to design all of the operational areas. After that we were appointed to design the first Bob Marley – One Love Restaurant by the F & B operator working with the Marley Family. Finally, our longstanding client, Dufry, asked us to design the new walk-through duty free store. We have been fully immersed in the Montego Bay Experience.
Planning was a challenge, with all passengers arriving between the two departure piers in a narrow space. We solved it by reconfiguring the space to ensure that all passengers pass all of the commercial space on their way to their gates. This was made possible by expanding the terminal to create a new iconic eating area overlooking the apron.
We identified a wide variety of characteristics that epitomised Jamaica and produced a design manual that covered all areas of the terminal. The design of the commercial area was inspired by palm trees; their trunks, fronds and fruits.
INTERIOR DESIGN OF THE TERMINAL
Our brief was expanded to other areas of the terminal including security, the piers, and baggage reclaim as well as the arrivals route.
EXTERNAL ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE EXPERIENCE
The landside space offered an enormous amount of potential, especially for arriving passengers where the hotel resorts have welcome facilities. We created a whole Jamaican experience to make the first step into Jamaica a special moment.
THE DUTY FREE SHOP
We have worked with Dufry for many years, designing their most important stores. They selected us to work on the expanded store at Montego Bay knowing our deep understanding of the country and culture.
